Food In Review

food

i feel like i haven’t posted in a really long time. and i know that we have eaten. just doesn’t seem like what we are eating has been terribly…memorable.

but, in the spirit of full disclosure, i figured it would be a good idea to share. even if we didn’t like the food, you might. different strokes for different folks and all that.

here is what we have been eating lately. or at least attempting to eat [particularly in the case of the epic fail that was rapini]:

i’ve also learned a few things about food recently, and thought i would pass it along:

  • you do need to use dried chickpeas when making falafel. it’s the only way to get them to come out right.
  • we heart bok choy. who knew?
  • rapini [aka broccoli rabe] makes us want to wash our mouth out with soap. it’s really bitter. we won’t be visiting that vegetable for a while. [and yes, i am well aware that i probably didn't cook it right. but i followed directions to the T.]
  • meyer lemons are sweeter than regular lemons. and are a crossbreed with a mandarin orange. again, who knew?
  • quince can only be eaten after it’s been cooked. and when cooked, it turns a pretty pink color.
  • vegetable soup is fun to make. i mean, how bad could it be to throw in a bunch of random veggies, beans, and broth?
  • i actually crave veggies and healthy food. when did that happen?!
  • i enjoy talking to people about food, learning about how it affects the body [both good and bad], and helping people make better choices. thank you iin.
  • a lot of people  have food sensitivities and/or issues. probably more than would like to admit even.

If you are like me, you will become shamelessly addicted to Meyer lemons and will steal them from the neighbors’ trees (which I no longer can do because we moved and I mourn, I tell you, I mourn, although they are celebrating an unexplained bumper crop this year) and you will insist that no other lemon will do and your friends will start to shuffle away from you every so gently when the topic of lemons comes up and you must, simply must, tell them the latest thing you did with some gorgeous Meyer lemons and …

    Well, you’re getting my drift!

    Cheers!

This statement… i actually crave veggies and healthy food. when did that happen?!
I thought the same thing yesterday. I went to a local grocery store and their veggies were looking less then pleasant so today I will head on over to Trader Joes for something delicious to eat at lunch. I’ve been so good and it really feels great.

I have snacked a lot less and eaten a lot more fruits and veggies…I’m even considering trying a new veggie this week. We’ll see what’s in season.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and ideas so the rest of us don’t feel so inadequate trying to eat mo’ veggy! :-)

I regularly make the orzo disk from the quick fix vegetarian but I substitute broccoli, spinach, or collard greens. I LOVE that recipe.
