What made you decide to become a veggie/raw foodist?
From the second puberty hit I was a curvy full figured woman. I ate any thing I wanted and didn’t’ care what it did to me. When I was 16 years old my oldest sister did a semester of school in England. She came back telling me all about the protest she saw regarding the meat industry. I was inspired and we decided to make the change together. A big part of my decision to become vegetarian was just to see if I could do it. 9 years later I have not only made it but moved on to exploring a raw food diet.
My interest in Raw food started last September while at the doctors office I weighted in at what was to me a staggering 183lbs on my small 5 foot 4 inch body. I knew something had to be done so I started eating healthier. One day I “stumbled upon” a raw foods message forum and have yet to look back. Seeing the changes physically & mentally is so exciting to me and I cant wait to see what tomorrow will bring. I currently weigh 160lbs and am still loosing weight. I have been eating about 75% raw for a month now and work more raw foods in ever day.
What foods do you miss the most (if any)?
If anything I miss creamy sugary foods. I am a sugar addict and am learning with my raw food diet to kick those cravings and only eat natural sugars like thoose in fruits, honey & plants like agave. I struggle with this and still occasionally give in to an ice cream sundae. Luckily I just scored an ice cream maker at a thrift store and have begun making my own raw ice creams from bananas & coconut cream
yummmmm!
What has been the easiest part of becoming a veggie?
The easiest part is trying all the amazing new foods there are available. I cook every day and am excited every time I make something new. I LOVE sharing my new amazingly healthy foods with my friends & family. Hearing them say “this is SO good” validates everything I believe in this healthy food movement.
What’s been the hardest?
The hardest thing is the lack of healthy options when I am out with friends or traveling.
It amazes me that even here, in Berkeley, CA where there is a huge focus on healthy lifestyles, I still come across restaurants who don’t even have one vegetarian option. I often times find myself piecing together sides & walking away unsatisfied. It would be great if there were more options
